The Influx of Virtual Assistants

Virtual Assistant is the current word of mouth. It is an industry now getting into the mainstream; attracting more professionals to serve under its wings and drawing more business and lay people alike to benefit from it. But what really is a virtual assistant? Why do business men resort to it?

Wikipedia defines Virtual Assistants as independent contractors, not employees, who structure their own rates and operating standards and policies, pay their own self-employment taxes, and control management of the work and how it is carried out. These are professionals who are experts in their own field who do not need to report to an employer but rather work with clients. They do not have interviews with potential employers; they have meetings with potential clients. Services are not done in the vicinity of the ‘offices’; they are performed in the virtual assistant’s own niche.

What cause the influx of virtual assistants? All right, the business world’s been accustomed to the presence of administrative assistance doing daily mundane administrative tasks that are time consuming. But then again, why resort to the virtual professionals?

There are several reasons why virtual assistants from countries like the Philippines are more favored. In the first place, virtual assistance liberates these working men from the burden of too much work, giving them time to focus on their core duties and responsibilities. Virtual assistants take care of your bookkeeping, schedule appointments, return or answer your phone calls, manage your e-mails, make reservations, type and mail your correspondences, create and manage your database, update your website, etc. Such tasks can be delegated to the VA at minimal costs.

Hiring these Virtual Assistants is a cost efficient technique. It cuts down cost on salaries, benefits and perks the conventional hiring features. They come braced with their own tools and equipments that they themselves also upgrade, so it eradicates your budget for office equipments and communication tools that you would be required to purchase when you hire a traditional assistant. With Virtual assistants, there is no need for office space and utility expenses that come along with it – electric bills, water bills, telephone bills, internet bills and sometimes even food and refreshments.

Virtual assistants give working entrepreneurs the chance to live up to their duties and responsibilities towards their respective families without compromising their careers. They are able to enjoy their lives without neglecting their jobs. Given the said reasons and other else not mentioned, it is now clear why people shift gears to virtual assistants.

Hi Reamay,

That's a very good post you did about virtual assistants. The industry is particularly young in the Philippines and not so many people still understand how it works. As a virtual assistant myself, I get a lot of inquiries on how to 'apply' as one.

I guess I couldn't stress enough that being a virtual assistant means taking up a business, not a job. Your reference on Wikipedia about the industry's definition is very appropriate. Like any other business, there are responsibilities that you need to owe up to which you don't normally encounter when you're employed. And as all businesses are, this type of endeavor is not for everyone.

Perhaps a feature on the myths of being a virtual assistant would be a good follow-up to your article. Until then, kudos to you and your team for a well-written post!

Best regards,
Jonathan Gabriel

I must say that Philippines is one of the great spot to outsource and hire some virtyual assistants. Filipinos, indeed, are known as very hardworking people with great skills, patient, upbeat and very accommodating. I do believe that these are the characteristics that the VA must possess. In fact, there are numerous outsourcing businesses way down here and also different call centers that built in the entire country. So, why not? give it a try.
